METHODOLOGY
Centre for Forecasting and Research (C fore) conducted the
survey to rank top B-schools in
India based on their performance in year 2002-03.The
methodology and parameters for evaluation were reviewed by a committee
consisting of representatives from industry and academia which was headed
by managing editor of Outlook Sandipan Deb. Two new parameters were added
namely International linkages and extracurricular activities
and also only those institutes/branches were considered from where at
least one batch has graduated.
The B-schools were ranked based on objective data and the satisfaction
scores of key stakeholders i.e. industry, students and faculty. The survey
was open to all B-schools in
India at site www.indiabschools.com where a
questionnaire designed for the survey could be down loaded. Invitation
was also sent to 769 B-schools to participate. In all 226 of them
responded. The validation exercise was carried by a special team which
cross-checked the data by asking for necessary documents like appointment
letters, balance sheets, annual report etc. Field visits were also
conducted to check the veracity of information. This year again 65
B-schools had to be dropped from the survey, for fudging data.
The objective scores were obtained by evaluating B-schools against the
following six broad parameters
-
Placement performance
-
Intellectual capital
-
Infrastructure and
facilities
-
Industry interface
-
International Linkages
-
Extra curricular
activities
These were further divided
into sub-parameters as shown in the table. The marks were allotted in a
particular category by normalizing against the topper in that category.
E.g. if marks for maximum salary are 55 and the highest in this category
is Rs 15 Lakhs, then marks allotted to an institute is where maximum
salary offered was Rs 3 Lakhs were 3/15 * 55 = 11.B-schools whose
flagship course is oriented to specialized subject were listed under
sectoral B-schools and were evaluated against the same parameters.
The satisfaction survey of recruiters was conducted online at site
indiabschools.com.679 of them participated.
The recruiters were asked to rate the graduates of the B-schools they
were familiar with against six parameters namely effectiveness in
application of knowledge of subject / Skills, analytical skills,
communication and presentation skills, creativity, proactive attitude and
ability to work in team. A poll was also conducted among 59 top league
corporate executives to find corporate executives to find out what they
value most in a MBA graduate and also how they evaluated the top three
B-school graduates on these parameters. The satisfaction survey for
students and faculty was open to students and faculty of all B-schools at
indiabschools.com since
September 2nd 2002. In all 6100 students and
2,269 faculty members participated. The aggregate score of the year long
exercise was taken to asses a institute. The students and faculty were
also asked to rank top B-schools in the country and also in their state.
These results and other findings are available at site indiabschools.com.
The satisfaction survey is a continuous exercise and any student or
faculty of B-school can participate in it. The average score will be used
for next round of survey. Any new B-school who wish to participate in the
next year survey can also register with us at the site.
The project team consisted of Premchand Palety,
N.K Sinha, Shaaista Bhat, B. Bhattacharya, Naveen Bhatt, Tanmay Kumar
Pradhan and Ajay Kumar.
