METHODOLOGY
C fore
conducted
the survey to rank top B-schools in India based on their performance in
year 2003-04.The methodology and parameters for evaluation were reviewed
by a committee consisting of representatives from industry and academia
which was headed by managing editor of Outlook Sandipan Deb.
The B-schools were ranked based on objective data and the satisfaction
scores of key stakeholders i.e industry, students and faculty. The survey
was open to all B-schools in India at site www.indiabschools.com
where a questionnaire designed for the survey could be down loaded.
Invitation was also sent to 950 B-schools to participate. In all
236 of them responded. The validation exercise was carried by a special
team which cross-checked the data by asking for necessary documents like
appointment letters, balance sheets, annual report etc. Field visits were
also conducted to check the veracity of information.
The objective scores were obtained by evaluating B-schools against the
following six broad parameters
1.
Placement performance
2. Intellectual capital
3. Infrastructure and facilities
4.
Industry interface
5.
International Linkages
6.
Extra curricular activities
These were further divided into sub-parameters as shown in the table. The
marks were allotted in a particular category by normalizing against the
topper in that category. E.g if marks for maximum salary are 55 and the
highest in this category is Rs 14 lakhs, then marks
allotted to an institute is where maximum salary offered was Rs 7
lakhs were 7/14 * 55 = 27.5 B-schools whose
flagship course is oriented to specialised subject
were listed under sectoral B-schools and were evaluated against the
same parameters.
The satisfaction survey of recruiters was conducted online at site
indiabschools.com. 718 of them participated.
The
recruiters were asked to rate the graduates of the B-schools they were
familiar with against six parameters namely effectiveness in application
of knowledge of subject / Skills, analytical skills, communication and
presentation skills, creativity, proactive attitude and ability to work in
team. A poll was also conducted among 102 top league corporate executives
to to find out what they
perceived top B- schools in different areas of specialization and
also in different sectors. The executives were asked to rank top Bschools
in their respective areas. The average score thus arrived was used to rank
the sectoral Bschools. The satisfaction survey for students and
faculty was open to students and faculty of all B-schools at
indiabschools.com since September
2003. In all 7200 students and 1,689 faculty members participated. The
aggregate score of the year long exercise was taken to asses a institute.
The students and faculty were also asked to rank top B-schools in the
country and also in their state. These results and other findings are
available at site indiabschools.com. IIM Indore and Kozhikode did not
participate while Wellingkar institute sent the data after the last date
so could not be considered. Some 70 B-schools were dropped for streching
the facts a little too far.
The project team consisted of Naveen
Bhatt, Tanmay Kumar Pradhan, N.K Sinha, B. Bhattacharya, Dheeraj Awasthy,
Ajay Kumar and Premchand Palety.
