TOI blew the lid on the scam in Pune

Pune / New Delhi :   The Common Admission Test  (CAT) for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) was cancelled on Sunday following leakage of the question paper and arrest of ten suspected agents in Pune and Delhi.

Union HRD minister Murli Manohar Joshi said :  “ The leakage is being inquired into and those found guilty will be brought to book.” The probe will investigate why no action was taken by IIM, Ahmedabad, despite information about the leakage.

In pune, raids were launched on Saturday night after The Times of India tipped off police commissioner A N Roy.  A crack team accompanied by 3 TOI journalists undertook a series of raids leading to the arrest of six people, including a girl.  All the six are in their 20s.  They were luring students into paying Rs 1.5 Lakh to Rs. 3 lakhs for a set of question papers in advance.

In Delhi, the CBI arrested four persons, including three doctors from Bihar, from a hotel in the Mahipalpur area near Vasant Kunj in south delhi.  According to PTI, the four included the kingpin of the scam, Dr. Ranjit Singh of Bihar.  They were giving out the questions, along with answers, to four candidates.

According to the CBI, the gang was involved in leakage of question papers for other entrances too, including the All India Medical Exams,  CBSE pre-medical and bank probationary officers tests.  The CBI has detained at least 10 people including some students in Delhi and Patna, where the agency carried out raids at five places including a nursing home owned by Ranjit Sngh.


The raids in Pune followed seven telephonic conversations between a TOI journalist and one of the agents offering the papers.  Investigations were continuing.  The Pune police claimed to have established a link between the arrested agents in Pune and their source in Delhi.
