FMS
celebrates Golden Jubilee with a grand Convention
Faculty
of Management Studies, Delhi held its annual Corporate Mega Event
‘Convention 2003’ to celebrate its golden anniversary on the 29th
of November and attracted a galaxy of corporate stars. FMS was
incepted way back in the year 1954. FMS was the brainchild on the
great Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, the eminent economics professor of Delhi
University. It was built on the efforts of luminaries like Prof.
Dasgupta, Dr. P. N. Dhar and Prof. Abad Ahmed. The daylong
‘Convention’ was divided into three sessions. The seminar’s
focus was on the “Essence of Leadership”, a topic that the
speakers relished. Dr. F. C. Kohli, Former Vice Chairman, TCS,
considered by many as the father of the Indian IT industry,
inaugurated the seminar.
The
50 year passage has been a steep learning curve for the institution,
during which it has carved a niche for itself as one of the premier
B-schools of India. It helps in being steeped with history and to be
associated with some of the most eminent faculty in India. No wonder
the landmark year holds a great significance for FMS.
The
first session focused on the leadership mantra. Mr. Ravindra Kumar,
Executive VP, Credit Lyonnais, Mr. T. N. Ninan, Chief Editor and
Publisher, Business Standard Mr. Mahendra Swaroop, CEO, Times Internet
Ltd.,
Major General Khurana,Director General, AIMA were the speakers,
all of them leaders in their own right.
The
second session turned to address the very important issue whether
management education system was helping in creating leaders. The
panelists consisted of the likes of
Mr. Arun Maira, Chairman, BCG, Mr.Satish Pradhan, Executive VP,
HR, Tata Sons,
Mr. Ashok Chandra, Former Secretary, Human Resource
Development, GOI, Prof. P. G. Apte,
Resource
Development, GOI, Prof. P. G. Apte, Director, IIM Bangalore and Prof.
S. L. Rao, Former Director General, NCAER and founder member, FMS.
The panelists were concerned whether we were simply producing
drones who are driven externally instead of leaders having an innate
desire of pursuing their goals. In that light, management students
often make excellent managers but
fail as ‘creative leaders and entrepreneurs’.
In
the third and final session the day, the panelists discussed the role
of leadership in corporate world today. Corporate leaders shared their
views on how the leadership role has changed in an enterprise. The
eminent panelists were- Dr. P. Balasubramaniam, Director, Infosys
Leadership Centre, Mr. Rajeev Karwal, CEO and MD Elotrolux Kelvinator
Ltd, Mr. Sunder Hemrajani, Executive Director- Sales Pepsi India and
Mr. Dhruv Prakash, Practice Leader, Asia-Pacific Region, Hewitt
Associates. Mr. Sunder Hemrajani, himself an FMS alumnus, emphasized
on innovation leadership and cost leadership followed by execution as
the three main contributing factors to the success.
The
closing ceremony by Mr. Jairam Ramesh provided a fitting end to a
landmark day in FMS’s history. Emphasizing the importance of the
great educational institutions of India created during the 50’, he
hoped that the IIT’s , IIM’s and the FMS’es don a role, which is
more than just being
technocratic educational institutions. He spoke of the need for
transformations required to ensure that education in itself does not
end up constricting horizons in the new modern India.
