MHRD had threatened to take over IIMs

The government had threatened to take over the management of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) at the stormy meeting of the IIMA Society on March 9.

As per the transcripts submitted along with the IIMA affidavit filed in the Supreme Court today, Mr V S Pandey, joint secretary, ministry of human resource development said during the meeting, "It is not an ordinary issue. Let me again very humbly request all the Society members... sir, we will be moving very very far and consequences are immense. Let me tell, sir, your provision gives the power, I did not want to say but you left no space. I have to say, sir, the government has power to dissolve your Society and take over the administration of your IIM. Do you want that Sir? Read that clause... if the government feels that Society is not working properly, it shall take over the management.
