HRD Oks IIM move to revert to old fee

The HRD ministry has accepted the IIM directors’ proposal to revert to the old fee structure, linking scholarship to the admission process which was not in practice until now, reports our Delhi/ Ahmedabad Bureaus.

However, there is a catch.  The proposal to revert to the old fees is applicable only for the academic session  2004-05.  A revision of the entire fee structure is still on.  It was necessary to adopt the old fee system for this year as the admission process for the IIMs is under was and there is paucity of time to take an immediate call.  The ministry and the directors of the six IIMs who met MHRD secretary SC Tripathi in New Delhi Tuesday agreed that a call on the issue will be taken by the respective boards after the admissions for the 2004-05 academic sessions are completed.  Running to the timetable set by HRD minister Arjun Singh, directors of the six IIMs met with ministry officials to present their “consensus view” on the fees to be charged.

And true to their word, the issue was dealt with the IIMs proposing a return to “the good old days” of fees ranging from Rs 1.2 to Rs 1.6 Lakh.  The 90 minute meeting between the IIM directors and education secretary Sc Tripathi and additional secretary Sudeep Banerjee focused on the need based scholarships and the shape it would take.
