Another Joshi wisdom gets a burial,
you can now donate direct

HRD Minister Arjun Singh today scrapped the government order, passed by his predecessor Murli Manohar Joshi, which stated that all donations to government-run institutions had to be routed through the Bharat Shiksha Kosh.

The Joshi order had angered NRIs and leading corporate executives, as it prevented them from handing over money directly to their alma mater. And the Kosh, though officialy launched in January last year, never really got going. Apart from the corpus of Rs 1 crore provided by the government, it received donations from four individuals. The total received: RS 1, 651.

US-based NRIs said they received tax benefits only when they issued cheques in the name of the institutions from where they have graduated, and not to a Centrally-controlled fund that the American revenue office doesn't even acknowledge.
