Security Analysis and Equity Research
Security Analysis and Equity Research
is an important professional activity in the economies that
provide significant mobility for private capital. Where there is a
plethora of investment opportunities in the market, the need for
judicious evaluation is more pronounced. The investors and their
advisors continuously evaluate the businesses whose securities are
available for investment and make their investment decisions.
Proper or optimal allocation of capital occurs only when this
activity is done using the best methods and tools available.
Presently,
in many countries, the equity research profession is under attack.
The buy recommendations are given for certain glamour scrips even
at very high prices. The problem perceived is that the equity
analysts employed by various financial intermediaries are
preparing reports to serve the business interests of their
employers, neglecting the interests of investors. Also, the
reports have a short-term trading perspective. Hence, buy
recommendations are placed on glamour scrips at high prices. The
expectation is that there is still momentum in the scrip to go up.
In such a scenario, if an opportunity is given to B-school
students, reports prepared by them can provide an alternative and
an unbiased perspective. Also this exercise will help them to
learn the subject better.
Such an opportunity was provided to business school students
learning Security Analysis and Equity Research by a competition
organized by
S.P.Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai
Khoj
In search of believability
An All India B School Equity
Research Contest
The competition
provided a chance to B-school students interested in equity
research and security markets as a career option to display their
learning to eminent professionals of the industry and gain
exposure.
We extended an invitation to management students to submit an
equity research report recommending a stock along with a concept
paper.
After a preliminary short-listing, the papers were sent to the
judges for evaluation and the top 6 entries were
identified. These participants are now required to make a
presentation before the judges as a part of the final round.
