“We
look forward to building a strong relationship with IIM Kozhikode.
We have enjoyed interacting with students from IIMK.” – Capital
One
The highlight of Placements 2005 was the debut of foreign
recruiter Capital One, putting IIMK firmly on the international
recruiter map. The US financial services giant made an offer of
$85,000 (Rs.37.4 lakhs) to Gaurav Agarwal, who will be joining the
firm in the USA, as a Senior Business Analyst in October.
IIM Kozhikode has enjoyed a stellar placement season with a
significant rise in international, consulting and finance offers
over previous years. With an increased batch strength of 120 (60 in
previous years), the Class of 2005 had the cream of the corporate
world participating in Placements 2005, including first-time
recruiters like Capital One (recruiting for positions in the USA),
Deloitte Consulting, JP Morgan Chase, Cap Gemini and ITC. They were
joined by regular recruiters including the likes of Citigroup,
Accenture, GE, IBM, Asian Paints, HP, Kotak, Godrej and the Aditya
Birla Group who returned to campus to draw from the IIMK talent
pool.
The highest Indian salary came from the consulting sector – an
offer of Rs. 10.15 lakhs from Deloitte Consulting.
The
average Indian salary was Rs. 7.3 lakhs, (a considerable 15%
increase over last year) and with 194 job offers for 120 students,
students had an excellent choice of top jobs across sectors, with a
number of companies having to go empty-handed as there were no
available students.
The
largest recruiter at Placements 2005 was IBM, which made 17 offers
for roles in business consulting, SAP consulting, sales and
marketing and human resources.

Strong
lateral placement program: IIMK
continued to leverage its strong recruiter relationships and
outstanding alumni track-records in putting together an impressive
list of lateral placement recruiters – a number of whom also
participated in the regular Final Placement process for freshers, in
February. Though the lateral placement program has been a popular
recruitment option predominantly for IT firms in the past, this year
saw increased participation from consulting and financial services
firms. Commencing in October and running till the regular Final
Placement Process in February, the lateral placement program was a
rolling placement process that allowed firms and students with
significant prior work experience more flexibility in recruitment.
The
Class of 2005 – A diverse, world-class group of achievers.
For
the 120 individuals of the Class of 2005, who gained entry to the
hallowed portals of IIM Kozhikode, after a grueling admissions
process involving over 100,000 applicants to the IIMs, their
eclectic and distinguished peer group at IIMK has contributed
immensely to their learning, both within the classroom and outside.
With an average of 13 months of prior work experience, the Class of
2005 comes from diverse academic, professional and cultural
backgrounds including engineers, commerce and economics graduates,
chartered accountants, a former Navy submarine Commander, a fashion
designer and an architect. Following the trend, there are a number
of software engineers and also people with prior work experience in
a spectrum of organizations ranging from AT Kearney and PwC to
Deloitte (Dubai) and the World Bank. A number of students also have
significant international exposure through prior work experience
abroad, summer internships abroad (Singapore) or through
IIMK’s foreign exchange program (France & Germany),
which commenced last year.
In
a glowing testament to their caliber and superlative performance
during their summer internships, around 20% of the batch
received Pre-Placement-Offers (PPOs)/Pre-Placement-Interview (PPI)
offers from leading recruiters. 16 students garnered PPOs from
top firms including Asian Paints, GE Money, Gecis, Godrej, Wipro
Technologies, SBI, Patni, L&T, etc while 8 students
received PPI offers from ITC, Britannia and Wipro Consumer
Care. Best Project Awards at Wipro, Patni and SBI were won by
summer interns from IIMK.
The
strong recruiter perception and confidence in IIMK’s broad-based
curriculum has led to recruiters offering a wide range of roles to
students with different specializations – a significant instance
of this was that of five students majoring in human resources at
IIMK, receiving HR roles
from top firms including IBM, HP, Titan and ICICI OneSource.
A
detailed description of job roles of companies across sectors is
given below:
Banking
and financial services: (31%
of the batch) - The sector of choice for the majority of graduating
students, there was a dazzling breadth of firms and job roles to
choose from in the finance arena. The most coveted positions were
with Capital One, which was offering Senior Business Analyst
positions in the USA. In the investment banking space, a slew of
first-timers including JP Morgan Chase and SBI Capital Markets and
equity research firms Irevna and Adventity made a large number of
offers. Financial services giants Citigroup and GE Money continued
to be strong draws. Kotak offered attractive roles in private
banking and in portfolio management. An array of banking roles –
treasury, corporate banking, risk, credit and retail banking –
were on offer from SBI, UTI Bank, HDFC Bank and IDBI Bank. There
were also offers in bond trading (STCI), project/structured finance
(Power Finance Corporation), corporate finance (L&T) and
insurance (Metlife and Birla Sun Life (Aditya Birla Group)).
Consulting:
(13%
of the batch) – Some of the biggest names in the consulting space,
including Deloitte Consulting, IBM Business Consulting, Accenture,
Cap Gemini and Bristlecone descended on the IIMK campus to hire some
of India’s brightest young management talent. The participation of
consulting biggies like PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young
at summers this year is also an encouraging development for next
year’s consulting scenario at IIMK.
Marketing/FMCG:
(15%
of the batch) – There was a considerable increase in the number of
FMCG/marketing offers on campus with FMCG giants ITC and Godrej
making a large number of offers. Students had a range of sales and
marketing roles to choose from, in India’s leading FMCG/Marketing
firms – Asian Paints, Perfetti Van Melle, Madura Coats, Bharti
Televentures, Titan, Wipro Consumer Care and Cavinkare. Pharma major
Wockhardt offered roles in their International Marketing Division.
General
Management, Automotive and others: (6%
of the batch) – Automotive sector majors Tata Motors, Maruti and
Mahindra & Mahindra offered roles in marketing and general
management. The Aditya Birla Group, GMR group, L&T, BPCL, Career
Launcher and Genebridge provided opportunities in marketing and
general management.
IT:
(30%
of the batch) – IT/systems has traditionally been IIMK’s
strength over the years, and IIMK continued to attract the leading
IT firms with an enviable variety of IT roles – ranging from
business analyst and sales positions to business development and
project management roles. The majority of the IT firms offered roles
to both freshers as well as lucrative lateral offers to students
with prior work experience. IBM, HP, Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC)
and Covansys joined Indian giants like TCS, Infosys and Wipro,
Mahindra British Telecom, HCL Technologies, Patni, Ramco Systems and
Polaris in competing for talent at IIMK.
ITES:
(3%
of the batch) - The rapid-growing BPO sector in India continued to
provide exciting and lucrative opportunities for MBAs with roles in
quality/Six Sigma, transition, human resources, operations and
business development. The recruiters in this space included some of
the biggest names in the BPO sector – Gecis, WNS Global Services,
E-Serve and ICICI OneSource.
