NITIE was established as a National Institute in 1963 by the Government of India with assistance of the UNDP through the International Labor Organization. NITIE has been identified as one of the 14 Centers of Excellence by the Government of India along with IITs, IIMs, and IISc.

It offers the following 2-year Post-Graduate Programmes– 

1. Management Program, PGDIM

2. A Management Course, PGDIE

3. Industrial Safety & Environmental Management, PGDISEM

NITIE also offers Fellowship Programme of Doctoral level recognized as equivalent to Ph.D. of an Indian University and has been conducting several short term Management Development Programmes of one-week duration in various areas of Management. NITIE conducts Unit- Based Programmes, tailor-made to the requirements of the clients/ organizations. Besides training, NITIE is also engaged in applied research and offers consultancy in the various facets of Information Systems, Corporate Environmental Management, Marketing, Personnel and other related Management fields.

NITIE faculty members, drawn from various basic disciplines, have diverse experience in business, industry and government. In the era of rapid technological development and socio-economic transformations, NITIE endeavors to equip the managers, administrators and specialists in government, public utilities, industry and other service sectors with the necessary skill for efficient performance of their functions.

The Campus is located in one of the most picturesque surroundings of Mumbai flanked by Powai and Vihar Lakes. NITIE has physical facilities to conduct concurrently eight courses and can accommodate at a time 400 participants in self-contained single rooms. The classrooms and the auditorium are air –conditioned and well equipped with audio visual facilities and 2 Mbps internet connection.

NITIE is administered through a Board of Governors representing industry, government, labour and professional bodies with Shri Anand G. Mahindra, as Chairman and Prof. Tapan P. Bagchi, as Director.

Its flagship Business Event ‘Prerana’ is held in October every year. Over the years, Prerana has evolved from just a Summer Project contest to a full-fledged Business Event, which plays host to luminaries from both, the corporate world and the academia. The various events at Prerana include:

• "FICCI - Prerana Business Meet"

• Srijan - The Strategy game, in association with Britannia

• The Summer Project Contest

• International Business Quiz hosted by Derek 'O Brien.
