About
Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai

The Genesis ...

The year 1981 saw the opening up of the Management Education System in Mumbai with the decision of the University of Bombay to meet the burgeoning demand for young managers by allowing new Management Institutes to be set up. This broke the fifteen year old monopoly of the University's own Institution, JBIMS as the sole provider of management courses in Mumbai. One of the first educational trusts in the industrial and commercial capital of India to take advantage of this new opportunity to serve the world of business was Shri Vile Parley Kelavani Mandal.

With the string of gems of institutions in various disciplines under its belt, the SVPKM set up in 1981, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) named after the intrepid entrepreneur, Late Shri Narsee Monjee whose life was a saga of struggle against heavy odds in setting up a first class indigenous enterprise.

Governance : The Organs of Policy making

The overall management of the institute vests in the parent body, Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal(SVKM), which is led by a band of successful entrepreneurs and professionals with long areas of successful experience. The Mandal has been headed for more than two decades by Shri Chaturbhuj Narsee, a philanthropist deeply to the cause of education.

The institute has a distinguished Governing Councilwith representation from the parent body, industry, management experts and representatives from the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra. The Governing Body is responsible for policy formulation and direction of the affairs of the Institute. It is headed by Shri Mukesh R. Patel.

International Linkages: Power Of Networking

Visualizing the onset of globalization way back in 1986-87, the Institute went international in its linkages and has had academic links with the University of Stirling in U.K., Simon Fraser University and University of Calgary in Canada and Royal Melbourne Insinuate of Technology in Melbourne University of North London, U.K., St. Mary's University, Halufax, Canada and University of Bologne, Italy and is working out faculty student exchange and joint research arrangements with some more leading institutions in U.S.A., Canada and U.K.

The International linkages of the Institute have helped it in drawing upon the wisdom built up at the partner institutions of repute and long standing, in developing curricular and working out new Programmes.

The Institute also has the benefit of the participations by the International faculty participating in its Programmes on a visiting basis as a part of the faculty exchange. The faculty of the Institute has also had the opportunity of developing insights into International Business and other areas through visits to the collaborative institutions in countries like U.K. and Canada.

Beyond The Corporate Sector: Into Non Profits

As a premier Management School, the Institute has been closely associated with the Corporate Sector in India and has been providing professionally qualified managers at the entry level, education programmes for the working executives at the post- experience level in training and consultancy at the organizational level.

The Institute believes that the concepts, tools and techniques of management are as directly relevant to the non-profit and service sectors as they are to the corporate sector.

Inspired by the ethos of its parent body, NMIMS has gone beyond the corporate sector in its mission of influencing the quality of management and has established a Chair in the Management of Non-Profit Organizations. Its contributions in areas like Women's Entrepreneurship Development with support from the Scottish Enterprise Foundation of the University of Stirling, Scotland, U.K. and the Management of School Education through a project from the Aga Khan Foundation Geneva, Delhi, have indeed been path breaking and innovative. The Institute is also going into the Management of Non-Government voluntary Organizations and institutions in areas like health care and social welfare.
