About the Institute

T. A. PAI MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE, MANIPAL (TAPMI)

TAPMI
…Nurturing Wealth Creators

Evolving over two decades, TAPMI today has been consistently ranked among the top 20 business schools in the country. Starting with a relatively small batch size of 40 students in 1984, the number of students admitted to the Institute has grown to 140 today. Nearly 1,500 graduates have passed through the portals of TAPMI and are occupying positions of responsibility and influence in industry in India and abroad.

The recognition of the Institute has, to a large extent, been due to four key factors.

  • Academic rigour and close Faculty-student interaction

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation

  • Autonomy and Independence

  • Holistic approach to management education

Academic Rigour and Faculty-Student Interaction

The evolution of the Institute has largely been based on its internal processes - concern for a high quality programme supported by academic rigour. The quality of teaching material and standards of teaching have been continuously reviewed and upgraded to meet the changing needs of industry. Continuous evaluation, a mixed bag of teaching pedagogies – case analyses, simulation games and exercises, role plays and lectures – and experiential learning courses have contributed to laying a strong conceptual foundation with added practical knowledge.

The close interaction between the faculty and the students – through involvement in curricular and co-curricular activities marks TAPMI’s value and culture. TAPMI has a very strong and dedicated team of faculty with a good blend of sound academic and good industry background. TAPMI is perhaps one of the very few management institutes to have institutionalised a Student Self Assessment System with Faculty Mentors / coaches.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

One key differentiator of TAPMI education is the Management-in-Practice (MIP) that includes the Summer Internship. Beyond the normal work related to the summer project, students work on real-life organisational issues that results in development of cases and teaching material based on Indian experiences. Students are encouraged to develop and demonstrate their entrepreneurial skills – more particularly risk-taking and creativity – through active involvement in co-curricular activities such as the BrandScan (market research fair), and Atharva (with a business plan contest).

Autonomy and Independence

TAPMI is financially and academic autonomous and independent. The Institute is essentially faculty-driven, within the overall framework of the guidelines provided by the governing Council. This autonomy has been the primary reason for TAPMI’s ability to revise its academic curriculum at least once a year and to reflect the changing business needs in its operations. The process of admissions of students, recruitment of faculty, conduct of the programmes, and placement of graduates are all coordinated and executed by the faculty themselves.

Holistic Approach to Management Education

At TAPMI, education is a process and a means to achieve the end. From Self-Assessment, to Outbound Experience, to NGO Project, to the core courses on Business Awareness and Ethics are programmes and activities that develop the students as individuals.

And, it all adds up. TAPMI is the soil where the seeds of business leadership and greatness are sown. To grow with the knowledge and the ability to create wealth for the society they live in, the organisation they serve, and themselves as individuals.
